Anchorage Sales Tax
Someone posted about a statewide sales tax to reduce dependence on oil, which reminded me of how ridiculous property taxes in Anchorage are. I think we should adopt some sort of sales tax in the municipality to shift the burden from homeowners and everyone in Anchorage, especially tourists. To tax the people who actually intend to live in Anchorage for a decent period of time at the current rate is, in my opinion, is criminal. I don't mean put a sales tax on everything, I would exclude food and anything medical, but then we could get tax revenue from tourists and renters. It would also give more incentives to purchase homes in the Municipality of Anchorage as opposed to the Valley where the have a sales tax and lower property tax. Anyone have any thoughts?

If they do a sales tax the should eliminate property taxes. It would be nice if there was a city that proponents could site as an example where the switch from property tax to sales taxes have worked. Proponents need to hire the best salesman money can buy in order to make this happen.

ReplyDeleteBut the more important question is why are there so many taxes in a nation that was built on minimizing them? Shouldn't we be more worries about finding ways to reduce state expenses to lower all taxes and increasing everybody's income?
